Final Week!

Alright guys, a big upload!

It's the last week of the semester and I'm looking forward for the break. I've got some new stuff, including final projects, so let's get to it:

This is my Illustration 1 Final. The project was a Circus poster. Enjoy!
12x17 in, Digital.

And a high-resolution one for a better look ;)

The Circus Illustration Process for those interested...
(edit: for some reason Blogspot shrinked the file, it's probably too big)

This is my two week in-class final for Figure Painting class.
16x20 in, Oil on Canvas Board.

A figure painting homework. I don't like it, except for the shoes...
24x36 in (it's huge!), Oil on Canvas Board.

Our last in-class drawing from Heads & Hands class.
18x24 in, Black & White Charcoal on Toned Paper.

And finally some sketches I did at a coffee house.

That's it for now!

Sketchoff!

Last night me, Ed and Kelly had a sketch-off!
The limit on the first one was 20 minutes and the theme was vampires! Then we decided 20 minutes was way too short, so our next one was 45 mins and the theme for that was werewolves!

So here are my sloppy attempts, I need to get into digital more....

Editorial

Here's my finished editorial illustration. 10 3/4 x 8 in, Gouache on Ill. Board. Sorry for bad photo quality, my camera is dying :(

A little in-class exercise I liked. We were exploring a so-called "pull-off" technique. 4 x 6 in, Gouache on Ill. Board.

Gouache

This is my illustration for our Fable project. I chose the Icelandic myth telling the story of when the King of the Danes sent a wizard to Iceland on a scouting mission for invasion, but the wizard encountered the "landvættir", the protectors of the land. You can read the story here. Anyways, it's painted with gouache paint, a medium I'm still getting used to and not sure if I like or not...

These are two color thumbnails painted in gouache as well, for our next assignment, an editorial illustration. The final will be a little different, but with the same idea (future president Obama overlooking his new land on Pride Rock (from Lion King) (that's not an explosion on the right side, they're supposed to be clouds :P).

I had a nice thanksgiving, turkey and all. Only a few weeks left until Christmas break...
Finals are creeping up on us!

En Plein Air Painting

Hey. So Ed and I along with Raegan, Oscar and Poppy went Plein Air painting on thursday at Dolores Park. It was awesome! I did two pieces in oils. It was such a beautiful day, warm and sunny, and Dolores park has such a great view of SF. It was so much fun we're going again next thursday, possibly the beach this time. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome!

The Game

On 24 hour comic book day I did these pages here. I didn't stay the whole time. This is sort of an introduction to the Board Game...

Happy Halloween by the way!

Mo-mo-more!

This is my second pen-&-ink illustration for class. The project was to create a composite (like a movie poster for example) of a happy or bad memory. I chose a happy memory of when my family and I went to Namibia, Africa. That's us in the car with Oropoko lodge in the background.I went for a much simpler, stylized look for this one.
(possibly a color version on the way)

Some head drawings from Heads & Hands class, first one is 40 min, second 60 min.

The start of a painting from fig.painting class. Unfortunately we couldn't finish it, but there is something about this sketch I like, so I kept it.

Captain Fish

Alright guys, it's time for my first Illustration from my Illustration 1 class. The Assignment was a person in a room drawn in pen and ink, and I had to use a fish. So I came up with Captain Fish. He's a pirate-alchemist searching the seven corners of the earth for the Fish of Immortality. His last name is also Fish, haven't figured out his first name yet.

Anyways, for those interested I'm posting progress shots so you can learn too! :D

First I did thumbnails for the composition, but I don't have them at the moment. Then I sketched out the drawing with pencil on Smooth Bristol paper, with as much details as possible so it would be easier to ink.

Here I'm starting to ink it. I'm inking with a crowquill and real ink!

After I do all the outlines I pick up my other pens and start doing textures and even finer details.

When all the inking is complete I take some water and put little bit of ink in it, that will create a sort of grey wash that I can paint over areas I want darker. I used it to push the background further away so the figure is more of a focal point. I also did fiffed up some stuff with the wash too... And before you know it you're done!

Below is the final:

Blast from the Past

So I was browsing my computer and found bunch of my old drawings. I thought I might share them here since no one will ever see them again! These are from 2001-2003 so 7 years old!

I'll post some new stuff soon...
